2019 Running Schedule

Feb - Mesa Phoenix Marathon (AZ): 2:37:45. Lingering flu didn't help, but I still got a PR.

April - Bonneville Shoreline Trail Marathon (UT). Mostly just going to be a training run. Finally got myself into the sub-4 club last year, so I'll just have fun with it this year.

May - Stillwater Half Marathon (MN). Goal race for Spring. Looking for ~1:12.

October- Chicago Marathon (IL). We'll see where I'm at in Fall, but probably will be looking for low 2:30s.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Stay healthy, make improvements, maximize my potential.

Summer 2018 update: I'm lazy about copying over from Strava, so find me over there for day-to-day runs until I eventually get around to copying everything over here.

Hip is the same today that it was last night, ie quite unhappy.

Going to start paying attention to my weight (156.8 this morning) to ensure that I don't allow it to increase during the off season.  In fact, if I could get it down to more like an even 150, that would probably be ideal.

Sorry about your hip! I enjoyed your post from yesterday. Very well written and insightful. Good luck building the foundation before training resumes.

You were a topic of conversation on our run this morning. The general consensus was that we hope that this is something that feels worse than it actually is and that it will resolve itself quickly.

Take care of it and try to be fairly positive.

I know you've been trying to stay off the roads (and it may not matter at this point anyways) but have you thought about doing boring/flat soft-surface runs (like Liberty Park laps) so you don't have to deal with the pounding of downhill on trails?

Like Rob said, I hope this doesn't turn into something too bad.

Thanks for thinking of me, everyone. Jake, I'm not thinking that it would be wise to do any running at all for the time being. My intuition tells me that any running at all is going to be damaging (trails vs roads made no difference yesterday), so I'm going to hold off for now.

Yeah I hear that... I guess I was just thinking more in general - I tend to feel more beat up after up & down trail runs!

Just curious - do you know what exactly (or approximately) the hip injury is? We've obviously researched every possible type of hip injury over the past 9 months, so I'm just interested in what is going on in this case.

That's a good question. The original diagnosis last summer was bursitis, which was quickly changed to tendonitis. However, the presumable tendonitis always responded well to aspirin and twice last summer, when it was flaring up badly, I was able to get out for insanely hard 30+ mile long runs on it with absolutely no pain thanks to 2 aspirin (once up and down King's Peak, once at Speedgoat). Yesterday, I took 3 aspirin and it was still borderline excruciating on the downhills, so it seems like more than just inflammation at this point. Additionally, it used to be really bad on the uphills and not noticeable on downhills, but now it's far worse on the downhills, so IDK. I'll see a sports MD on Wednesday, so we'll see what he says.
