2019 Running Schedule

Feb - Mesa Phoenix Marathon (AZ): 2:37:45. Lingering flu didn't help, but I still got a PR.

April - Bonneville Shoreline Trail Marathon (UT). Mostly just going to be a training run. Finally got myself into the sub-4 club last year, so I'll just have fun with it this year.

May - Stillwater Half Marathon (MN). Goal race for Spring. Looking for ~1:12.

October- Chicago Marathon (IL). We'll see where I'm at in Fall, but probably will be looking for low 2:30s.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Stay healthy, make improvements, maximize my potential.

Annual Indoor Treadmill Marathon #2.  Last year, about the same time out from Phoenix, I hopped on a treadmill and ran 26.2 miles in 2:53:4x.  I decided a few days back that this was the ideal week to do it as my workout, so I did it tonight.  Time was 2:45:32.  Last year, when I ran the 2:53, I was hurting over the last 2 miles or so and couldn't pick up the pace.  In Phoenix, I was sick, but still ran nearly 4 minutes faster with a 2:50:00.1.  Tonight's 2:45:32 felt very relaxed.  I picked up the pace about 5 seconds per mile on miles 24 and 25, went another 25 seconds faster on mile 26, and then ran the last .2 at 4:57 pace.  Now, an hour later, my legs feel completely fine other than a tiny blister on the front of my right middle toe (just an air blister).

This was a major confidence booster.  I planned on running in the ballpark of, but no faster than, 2:45, so I hit that spot on, but it felt a lot more relaxed than I anticipated.  Splits were 63:41 for the first 10, 63:27 for the second 10, and 38:24 for the last 10k  19:04 for 20 to 23, 12:30 for 24 and 25, 5:50 for 26, and :59 for 26 to 26.2).  So yeah, I think sub-2:40 is very realistic come Phoenix.

wow, nice work! So a new PR by 4.5 mins? Not bad for a relaxed run on a Wednesday evening. Does your treadmill actually let you run that long without stopping? The 24hour treadmills timeout at 60 or 90 minutes.

Great workout, but I think you are nuts!!! :-)

Nothing like a treadmill marathon to build your mental stamina!

From CollinAnderson on Thu, Jan 16, 2014 at 09:54:56 from 70.196.195.242

Andrea hit the nail on the head! My iPod died at mile 15 and the TV in front of me was stuck on a 2 hour special on the Sturgis motorcycle rally, and then 2 even worse shows, so it was an exercise in not faltering mentally, while still building my endurance and strength physically.

Fritz, I won't count a treadmill marathon as a PR. :) Calling it "relaxed" is more in the sense that it was more relaxed than a race effort and I wasn't maxed out. It was certainly not just a stroll in the park. Hah. The treadmill went up to 65 minutes, so I had to restart it twice (hence paying attention to my 10 and 20 mile splits, but not my half marathon split).

Ummmm heck yeah that is kind of awesome. Some might say that running is crazy weather builds character but I'd say running on a treadmill for 2 hours 45 minutes with no TV builds a whole heck of a lot of mental strength. Also not a bad thing to get ready for the warmer (than we're used to) temps in AZ.

I concur with the nuts comment but nice progression year over year especially given the injuries and down time.

The warmer temperature acclimation is definitely a good benefit of doing this indoors. The weather in Phoenix on March 1st is definitely more likely to be warm than cool.

Right, who knows what this converts to in real life, but the 8 minute improvement is great.

nice job, collin.

From CollinAnderson on Thu, Jan 16, 2014 at 11:41:36 from 155.98.15.26

Thanks everyone. I think doing a lot of my workouts indoors in higher temps will help, as mentioned. James, my calculations give this a 2:44:50 flat/sea level equivalent, converting for a combination of altitude and lack of wind resistance on a treadmill. Phoenix is lightly downhill with a slight bit of elevation (slightly aided), but also slightly long due to measuring with the whole road and coning runners into one lane, so I want to say that it should be about 20 seconds slower than, say, Berlin. In other words, it's pretty close, time wise, to running on a treadmill up here. Overall, what matters is that I was able to eke out a race time 4 minutes faster than my "treadmill workout" time last year, despite working harder in the treadmill workout and having a bad day, health wise, in the real race. Therefore, I think at this point that anything slower than 2:41 in the actual race would be a poor performance, and I realistically won't be happy with anything slower than 2:39:59.

From CollinAnderson on Thu, Jan 16, 2014 at 11:41:53 from 155.98.15.26

But, knowing me, I'll probably end up running a 2:40:00.1 or something. :)

Real life? Are you suggesting it was a virtual treadmill James?

Makes me want to hop back on a treadmill. Nice job Collin!!
