2019 Running Schedule
Feb - Mesa Phoenix Marathon (AZ): 2:37:45. Lingering flu didn't help, but I still got a PR.
April - Bonneville Shoreline Trail Marathon (UT). Mostly just going to be a training run. Finally got myself into the sub-4 club last year, so I'll just have fun with it this year.
May - Stillwater Half Marathon (MN). Goal race for Spring. Looking for ~1:12.
October- Chicago Marathon (IL). We'll see where I'm at in Fall, but probably will be looking for low 2:30s. Long-Term Running Goals: Stay healthy, make improvements, maximize my potential. Personal: I am a bioengineering PhD currently working as a post-doctoral research fellow in the Department of Neurology at the University of Utah, where I design and improve neurosurgical approaches for treating movement disorders.
Summer 2018 update: I'm lazy about copying over from Strava, so find me over there for day-to-day runs until I eventually get around to copying everything over here.

| Treadmill to simulate lower elevation. 1 mile warmup in 6:50, 7 miles at 6:00 pace (feels harder than MP right now for sure, but this was my first workout of sorts in quite awhile, so that's OK), 1 mile at 5:48, 2 mile cooldown at 8:00 pace.

| Got my Skechers GoRun 2 today and they feel good just for walking around, so I'm excited to take them out for a spin tonight. Looking at my shoe history, I'm getting a little more mileage out of my flats, on average, than my actual training shoes, so hopefully this shoe will hold up. I'm sick of throwing away shoes at 3xx miles, but based on my odd wear patterns, I suspect that this thinner soled and more minimal shoe will hold up better for me than the Kinvaras have. Nothing against Saucony there... I can't wear thickly soled shoes and expect them to last long. On higher profile shoes, my "unique" right foot strike wears down the outsides of the sole, which makes my foot hit at a slight and always increasing angle, putting massive stress on the outer edge of the uppers, causing premature wear. This pair, which is basically a pair of slightly beefed up racing flats, appears that it will be too low to the ground to have that issue, not unlike the A6, just with (hopefully) more durability, so I would be surprised if I can't get somewhere in the 600-800 mile range out of them. If I can get that for $50, I'll be quite happy.
6:30 PM run: 7.9 miles at 6:58 AP. Easy effort until the last mile, which I ran in 7:02 up a 4% average grade, and which felt more like tempo effort. Ran to Liberty, 3 laps (2 with Zach Barrett-O'Keefe, who I ran into there), then back home. Was going to do more now that I have more time, but it is raining ridiculously hard, so I'll pass on doing another 3-4 miles. :)
Oh, and LOVED the Skechers. They were super awesome.

| 2nd run in the Skechers and loving them.
13.5 miles, 7:37 AP. My place to 9th East to 39th South to 5th East to South Temple to my place. Pretty late (10:30), but not crazy late. Really windy, which felt nice.

| Very late night run (started at just shy of 1 AM!) due to not being able to get out earlier. I'm glad that I've gotten to the point at which it's just become second nature again that I run everyday and don't take a day off, although I was super exhausted during the run. Fortunately, I ran with Holly and she didn't really want to run faster than 8:30 pace, so it stayed nice and easy (8:26 AP). My place to South Temple along 5th E to Liberty, half lap, along 13th to 9th E to 21st S to 7th E, back to Liberty, along mulch and then back up 7th E to South Temple and back home. Basically a big figure 8. Now that it's after 2 AM, it's really time for bed...

| Body felt kind of tired during the day, so I kept it short and easy in preparation for a long run tomorrow. Late again because I had to attend a going away party and a birthday party. By the time I got out, my body felt good, and my 5.2 miles with Holly at 8:19 AP left me wanting more. My place to Liberty, one lap, then back.

| 15.1, 7:15 AP, almost exactly 2000' of climb and 2000' of loss. My place to Memory Grove, up to the top of City Creek (to the trailhead gate) and back, with a slightly longer loop around 2nd instead of directly on 4th on the way back. Did 5 of the downhill miles at marathon effort after a ~1 km transition into the downhill so I could start the faster miles right at 8 miles and, also, to avoid getting into the downhill until the grade leveled out into a more mellow slope at the better part of a mile down from the top of the road. I didn't want to beat my legs up, so I decided to run the splits around 5:50 and just keep it to about marathon effort (5:50/mile at marathon effort down city creek is worth about 6:01/mile at marathon on the St George course, where it is only half as steep, but much lower in elevation). Miles 9-13 were 5:48, 5:53, 5:50, 5:49, 5:43 (5:49 average) and didn't feel particularly taxing. Overall, it didn't take much out of me, but I'm going to be cautious tomorrow, as I could just feel a twinge of tightness in my hip in the final uphill mile. Extended uphills have always been a source of stress on it since the initial injury, and it's been healthy lately due to being smart about it, so I'm going to continue to be smart about it.
Oh, and note to self for future reference... Garmin software somehow thinks it was 93 degrees during my run, but that was definitely not correct. I went the full 15 with only 2 short sips of water (one at the top of the road and one in memory grove) and wasn't even thirsty by the end, so it wasn't very hot at all, even at the lowest elevation point.
