2019 Running Schedule

Feb - Mesa Phoenix Marathon (AZ): 2:37:45. Lingering flu didn't help, but I still got a PR.

April - Bonneville Shoreline Trail Marathon (UT). Mostly just going to be a training run. Finally got myself into the sub-4 club last year, so I'll just have fun with it this year.

May - Stillwater Half Marathon (MN). Goal race for Spring. Looking for ~1:12.

October- Chicago Marathon (IL). We'll see where I'm at in Fall, but probably will be looking for low 2:30s.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Stay healthy, make improvements, maximize my potential.

Really bad day. Left calf cramped up at 0.6 miles, left quad cramped at 1 mile.  Splits were off what I wanted them to be starting with mile 2, as I just mentally wasn't in it at all after feeling so crappy less than a mile in.  Calf cleared up after a few miles, but quad was really sore the entire race, to the point that I was worried about tearing the muscle on the steep downhills between 3 and 6.  So, basically, I had to just hang on for the last 12 miles of a 13.1 mile race. Not exactly what I wanted (I was hoping for a sub 1:14), but considering that my goal 1 mile into the race shifted to just making it to the finish line without walking, it could've been worse. The good thing is that it was really easy, aerobically, thanks to the copious downhill. Obviously the cramping is probably related to running another half last weekend, so I'm going to not race back to back halves in the future.  Post race, my right leg (the one with the recent hip troubles) feels totally fine, and the left quad and calf are really sore.  I don't currently have any injury concerns, but I'm going to be really careful coming back in the next week, just because I don't want to end up with some sort of compensation-type injury.  For anyone looking for a fast half course, this is by far the fastest I've ever been on, with the second quarter of the race literally on par with Alta Peruvian 8k, and the "rolls" on the course are really really not bad at all.  I think 1:13 was a reasonable goal; I was just extremely off my game today.  Oh well.

Official result online is listed as 1:15:23, but I actually ran 1:16:23.  I forgot to put my chip on my shoe and they manually entered my times based on gun time (I started right on the line, so it would be close enough), but they apparently entered it wrong.  I've emailed the timing company, but they haven't responded.  Not sure how to get it fixed.  Regardless of time, my place is 7th either way.

Sorry about the cramps, but you still ran a very respectable race today!

Thanks. It was well off what I'm in shape to run, so it just kind of fuels the fire to train hard and get the results I know I can hit. Congrats on your win!

Good point. I totally agree -- when I race more slowly than my fitness indicates, it fuels my fire unlike anything else!

Thank you. I had fun today.

Back to back 1/2s is pretty tough to pull off, especially when you run the first one hard. I think you recovered as well as you could have in-between, but its still pretty much impossible to do... in some ways its probably good that you realized you weren't "on" early and didn't push too hard and create an injury.

You'll have plenty of chances to run faster times. You're really just getting going again. The rest of the fall and winter will be a great chance to build a strong base and get some miles under your legs.

Thanks. And yeah, I had thought about doing a December marathon on pretty minimal training, but like you said, I have plenty of time to run fast times. At this point, I think I'm just going to try to get in some mileage and then peak for Phoenix. I really didn't just not feel "on" yesterday; I felt legitimately terrible. I was not pushing hard at all and someone at the finish told me that I made it "look really easy", so at least I know that I can go faster on a good day.

I think Jake is on the money with this one. Best to look at it as a fitness builder, stepping stone and move on to the next challenge. Collin, you have done remarkably well lately.. Remember that!

Good call on doing Phoenix again. You know the course and what to expect. Timing is good (you've got 4 months). And since there isn't much happening in terms of other races to get distracted by b/w now and then, you can really put in a smart, non-rushed block of training and prepare well for it.

Very respectable race considering the half marathon the week before and the cramping. It was nice to meet you Saturday.

Thanks! Great run for you! A big PR is always fun! I guess we hadn't technically met in person previously (although I've seen you at other races), so it was nice to meet you!
